Desang, a major southern perennial tributary of the Brahmaputra, is flowing at its highest-ever recorded level in Sivasagar and Charaideo, causing flooding and transport disruptions. Originating in the Nagaland Hills, the river is highly flood-prone during the monsoon.
The river drains a 2,029 sq km basin and has potential for micro-hydropower and irrigation. It also forms part of the boundary between the Dibrugarh and Sivasagar districts.
