The Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, Justice Sandeep Mehta, advised the Assam Government not to plant Conocarpus trees in the state under its urban area beautification projects as the tree is harmful for the environment as well as for human beings.

According to official sources, the State government has not planted Conocarpus trees in Assam. In the 1980s, eucalyptus trees were found in Assam, mainly on roadsides, in massive numbers. Eucalyptus, which is still seen in the state, is also not environment-friendly

The Conocarpus tree is widely used in cosmetic agriculture projects and can be easily trimmed and formed, especially in the streets and highways. It is also used as a fence and windbreak in open desert areas and on farms.
