The “Buck Moon” is the name given to the first full moon of July each year. This celestial event is marked by the moon appearing brighter and lower in the night sky than usual. Its distinctive position is influenced by its occurrence near the summer solstice—a time when one of Earth’s poles is tilted most directly toward the Sun.
Due to the Sun’s high daytime position during the solstice, the moon, which rises opposite to the Sun, follows a comparatively lower arc across the night sky. The term “buck moon” originates from Native American and colonial traditions, referring to the time of year when male deer (bucks) begin growing new antlers.
