Govt has extended the ban on United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) for five years .
This declaration extends to all its factions, wings and frontal organisations. The ULFA was first declared an unlawful organization in 1990 and has been extended periodically. In December 2023, ULFA’s pro-talks faction signed a pact with the Centre and the Assam state, agreeing to shun violence, disband the organisation.
Section 35 of the UAPA, 1967 empowers the government to declare an organisation as unlawful or an individual as terrorist if it engages in activities promoting terrorism or secession.
