Assam’s first sewage treatment plant has recently been inaugurated in Nagaon district.

Advantages of sewage treatment plants:

  1. Environmental Protection Prevents Water Pollution: STPs remove harmful contaminants, toxins, and pathogens from sewage before it is discharged into rivers, lakes, or oceans, thereby protecting water bodies from pollution.Conserves Aquatic Life: By treating sewage, STPs prevent the discharge of harmful substances that can negatively impact aquatic ecosystems, preserving biodiversity.
  2. Public Health Improvement
Reduces Disease: Proper sewage treatment reduces the presence of waterborne diseases such as cholera, dysentery, and typhoid, improving overall public health.Safe Water Supply: By preventing contamination of natural water sources, STPs help ensure a safer and cleaner water supply for communities.
  3. Resource Recovery Water Reuse: Treated sewage water can be reused for irrigation, industrial processes, or even recharged into groundwater, conserving fresh water resources.Energy Production: Biogas can be generated from the organic waste in sewage through anaerobic digestion, which can be used to produce electricity or heat.Fertilizer Production: The sludge produced during sewage treatment can be processed into bio-fertilizers, reducing the need for chemical fertilizers.
