The Assam Government has urged farmers to diversify into maize cultivation, citing rising demand from the ethanol industry and higher income potential. To encourage production, the State provides an additional ₹250 per quintal incentive over the Centre’s Minimum Support Price (MSP) of around ₹2,400 per quintal.

The government highlighted that growing domestic demand for maize-based ethanol can reduce fuel imports while increasing farmers’ incomes. Districts such as South Salmara and Mankachar have emerged as major maize-producing regions, reflecting the crop’s growing economic significance.
