Assam and other Northeast states frequently face landslides due to fragile hill slopes, intense monsoon rainfall and increasing human activity in vulnerable terrains. Strengthening early warning and monitoring systems has become crucial for disaster risk reduction in the region.
In this context, researchers at IIT Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, have developed a real-time landslide monitoring system using machine learning and advanced sensors capable of detecting ground movements of less than one millimetre. The system, deployed in landslide-prone areas of Mandi district, has achieved over 90% prediction accuracy. Such technology could be highly useful for disaster preparedness in Northeast India.
APSC Relevance: Important for disaster management, climate vulnerability and technological solutions for hill regions of Northeast India.
