Noted Assamese singer Sudakshina Sarma passed away on July 3 after battling various illnesses. She was 89 at the time of her death.
Born in Guwahati as Nirupama Hazarika in the year 1934, Sudakshina Sarma was the younger sister of ‘Xudhakontho’ Dr Bhupen Hazarika and the elder sister of Jayanta Hazarika.
After her marriage with lyricist and music composer Dileep Sarma, her father-in-law by marriage had given her the name ‘Sudakshina’.
Kotha Aru Xur, Jetuka Bolere, and Xaratkalor Rati are among her most well-known songs.

The iconic tourist destination of Guwahati, the ‘Dighalipukhuri’ has been renamed as ‘Entartica’ Dighalipukhuri. This comes amid allegations against the Assam Government that the tourist site has been leased to an outside company.
With the renaming, the prices for entry into Dighalipukhuri have also increased. The price of tickets per person has increased to Rs 20 now. The tickets show the name ‘Entartica’ attached to Dighalipukhuri.

The Army has announced the commencement of Phase II of the Agniveer Recruitment process. This phase marks a significant milestone in the Indian Army’s efforts to transform its recruitment procedures and ensure a seamless and efficient selection process for aspiring candidates. As part of the new recruitment system, the first phase involved an online common entrance exam that was conducted nationwide in April 2023. The results of the shortlisted candidates have been uploaded on the official website of the Indian Army, http://www.joinindanarmy.nic.in. Admit cards have been issued to these candidates for the upcoming rallies. The upcoming rally for northern, eastern, western and central districts of Assam will be held at the Missamari Military Cantonment, starting from July 18, 2023. For Dhubri, South Salmara Mankachar, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Baksa, Chirang, Darrang, Kamrup, Kamrup (metro), Kokrajhar, Nalbari, Tamulpur and Udalguri districts, rallied will be held from July 18 to July 25. For Nagaon, Morigaon, Biswanath and Sonitpur districts, rallies will be held from July 26 to July 29. Similarly for the districts of Golaghat, Majuli, Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh, Tinsukhia, Charadeo, Sivsagar, Jorhat and Dhemaji, rallies will be held from July 30 August 3.

Cachar district has bagged the best award for excellence in various fields of health services amongst 33 districts of the State in the recent health service assessment, which was held as per the guidelines of Gunotsav of the education department. Cachar has the highest number of ‘A’ grade government hospitals in the State – 22. Nalbari district secured the second rank. Twenty two hospitals in the district got A grade. However, even if the number of A grade hospitals in Nalbari district is 22, their position is much lower than that of Cachar district. Their position is 39th in the percentage ratio. The rate of A grade hospitals in Cachar district is 52 per cent. Morigaon district is third in the list after Cachar and Nalbari districts. Eleven hospitals in the Morigaon district got A grade. Their percentage is 27 per cent.

Assam’s daughter Uma Chetry has finally made it to the Indian Women’s National Cricket Team after being named in the squad to face Bangladesh in the upcoming series.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Sunday announced the squads to take on Bangladesh in the three-match T20 and ODI series to be held at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur.
According to reports, Uma Chetry has been drafted to both the T20 and ODI squads that will be led by Harmanpreet Kaur.
Assam Cricket Association’s (ACA) Uma Chetry is a wicket-keeper and has made the berth her own now.

Assam’s pride Olympic bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain and Asian Championships medallist Shiva Thapa will spearhead the Indian squad for the 19th Asian Games to be held in Hangzhou, China from September 23 to October 8, 2023.
With one World Championships medal an six Asian Championships medals, Shiva Thapa will be hoping to add a first Asian Games award to his kitty as he addresses the country in the 63.5 kg category.
