The long-anticipated Shillong Ropeway Project is set to commence construction by mid-November, according to Meghalaya’s tourism minister Paul Lyngdoh.
There are three companies participating, all of which have qualified up to the CEN standard. This is an international benchmark for ropeway projects in Europe, and due to the challenging topography of Meghalaya, govt is opting for the highest possible standard
The European CEN standard ensures the ropeway will meet stringent safety and operational requirements, reflecting the project’s commitment to quality.
In September 2022, the State Cabinet had approved the state’s first passenger ropeway project, which will run from Lawsohtun to Shillong Peak at an estimated cost of Rs 138 crore. To facilitate the project, the Cabinet also passed the Meghalaya Ropeway Bill, 2022, outlining the application procedures, licensing requirements, and safety protocols for ropeway operations in the state.
