Sea groynes are coastal engineering structures built out from the shore, typically perpendicular to the coastline, to manage beach erosion and sand movement caused by longshore drift.

Purpose of Sea Groynes:

  • Prevent Erosion: Groynes trap sand moving along the coast due to wave action, helping to build up the beach on one side.
  • Maintain Beaches: They help maintain a wide beach, which acts as a buffer against wave energy and protects the coastline.
  • Reduce Longshore Drift: By interrupting the natural flow of sediment, groynes slow down the movement of material along the coast.

Construction:

  • Materials: Usually made of wood, rock, steel, or concrete.
  • Design: They can be short or long, and sometimes used in series, creating a “saw-tooth” pattern along the shore.

Pros:

  • Effective at trapping sand.
  • Help build up beaches in specific areas.
  • Can protect valuable coastal properties.

Cons:

  • Can cause increased erosion down-drift (on the side not protected by the groyne).
  • Need maintenance.
  • Can be visually unappealing or affect natural habitats.
