Gujarat has become the first Indian state to launch a Tribal Genome Sequencing Project, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at improving healthcare outcomes for tribal communities through precision medicine. The project involves sequencing the genomes of 2,000 tribal individuals from 17 districts, creating a genetic reference database specific to these populations.
Implemented by the Gujarat Biotechnology Research Centre (GBRC), the initiative seeks to identify genetic risk markers for inherited disorders such as sickle cell anaemia, thalassemia, and hereditary cancers. The resulting insights are expected to aid in the early diagnosis, targeted therapies, and public health strategies tailored to the unique genetic profiles of tribal groups.
