The district administration of Jorhat, in collaboration with the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department and municipal bodies of Jorhat, Teok, Mariani, and Titabar, has initiated the establishment of four dog shelter homes across the district.
The move follows a landmark Supreme Court of India judgment (May 2026), which directed that stray dogs be permanently removed from high-footfall public spaces such as schools, hospitals, and transit hubs and housed in shelters instead of being released back into the same areas.
The initiative aims to improve public safety while ensuring humane management and care of stray dogs.
