Room for the River is a pioneering nature-based flood-management strategy developed by the Netherlands after severe near-floods in the 1990s. Instead of relying solely on higher and stronger dikes, it gives rivers more space to safely accommodate excess water.
The approach combines flood safety with ecological and spatial improvement, using measures such as restoring floodplains and allowing controlled water expansion. It represents a shift from fighting against water to living with water.
