The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is establishing 11 new Doppler Weather Radars across the Northeast to strengthen weather monitoring and improve the accuracy and timeliness of forecasts. The expansion will address the region’s historically sparse weather-observation network. Assam will receive radars at Guwahati (Kahilipara), Jorhat, Tezpur and Silchar.

At present, the Northeast has three radars at Sohra, Mohanbari and Agartala. The new network will use different radar bands: the Kahilipara radar is C-band with about 250-km range, while some locations will receive X-band radars with around 100-km range. Radars at Jorhat, Tezpur and Belonia are nearing operationalisation.
