The Centre has appointed former Supreme Court judge Justice Balbir Singh Chauhan as the Chairperson of the Commission of Inquiry probing the ethnic violence in Manipur, following the resignation of Justice Ajai Lamba effective from February 28. The commission is tasked with examining the causes, sequence of events and administrative response related to the unrest.

The violence began on May 3 after a Tribal Solidarity March organised in hill districts opposing the demand for Scheduled Tribe status by the Meitei community. The prolonged conflict has resulted in significant loss of life and displacement, highlighting complex ethnic and constitutional issues linked to identity and reservation policies.

APSC Relevance: Commissions of Inquiry Act, internal security challenges in Northeast India, ethnic conflicts, and Scheduled Tribe status debates.
