In a shocking escalation of Myanmar’s civil conflict, at least 80 people were injured when bombs were dropped from a motorised paraglider during a combined festival and protest event in Chaung U township, central Myanmar. The attack triggered panic and destruction, further highlighting the intense turmoil in the Sagaing region, a stronghold of resistance since the 2021 coup.
Amnesty International condemned the assault, calling it a “disturbing new tactic” and urging ASEAN to take immediate steps to protect civilians. Analysts note that international sanctions on conventional airpower have pushed insurgent groups to use smaller aerial platforms, many reportedly sourced from China and Russia.
The incident marks one of the most significant cases of improvised aerial weaponry in Myanmar’s conflict, raising fears of greater civilian casualties as both the junta and resistance forces adopt increasingly innovative and dangerous strategies.
