Assam has officially recognised Karbi as an official language for government communication in the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) area. With this decision, Karbi will be used alongside English for official communication in both Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong districts.

The move aims to strengthen administrative accessibility, safeguard the linguistic and cultural heritage of the Karbi community, and promote inclusive governance in the autonomous council areas. It also reinforces the constitutional commitment to preserving India’s linguistic diversity.
