Science & Technology
ISRO has successfully tested the bootstrap mode start on the CE20 cryogenic engine, which powers the upper stage of LVM3.
Bootstrap mode allows the engine to initiate its own start-up using internal fuel flow and system pressure, eliminating the need for external starters or auxiliary devices.
This results in lighter, simpler, and restart-capable engines, enabling complex mission profiles requiring multiple burns—such as GTO to GEO transfers, satellite constellation deployment, and deep-space manoeuvres.
APSC relevance: Important for India’s space technology, LVM3 capabilities, and advances in cryogenic propulsion.
