Social Justice & Gender Equality

India has shown notable improvement in reducing sex-based discrimination, with twelve states now recording a sex ratio at birth higher than the national average of 917. This progress was reviewed under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PC and PNDT) Act, which empowers the Central Government to prevent the misuse of medical technologies for sex determination and selection.

The meeting highlighted the continued challenge of addressing sex-selective practices that result in pre-birth elimination of female foetuses. It emphasised the need for stricter enforcement of the PC and PNDT Act and renewed awareness efforts to ensure gender equity and the protection of the girl child.
