India and Japan have signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) to implement the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM), aimed at advancing low-carbon technology projects. The JCM is a Japanese framework under which investments in climate-friendly technologies deployed in partner countries generate measurable emission reductions. These reductions are credited both to Japan, aiding its global emission targets, and to the host country, supporting sustainable development.

For India, the mechanism offers opportunities in technology transfer, mobilising green finance, capacity building in climate technologies, and trading carbon credits under Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement. It also strengthens bilateral cooperation while accelerating India’s clean energy transition and resilience-building efforts.
