Heimang (Rhus chinensis), also called Chinese sumac, is a small deciduous tree native to East Asia and Northeast India, particularly Manipur. Its berries are traditionally wild-foraged and sun-dried, producing a distinctive tart spice with notes resembling cranberry and jujube. In Assam, it is known as Nagatenga.
The Manipur Horticulture and Soil Conservation Department has initiated the process of securing Geographical Indication (GI) tags for six indigenous crops, including Heimang. GI recognition can help protect traditional produce, enhance its market identity and strengthen local livelihoods and indigenous agricultural practices.
APSC Relevance: GI Tags; Northeast Agriculture.
