Gujarat has passed the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill through a voice vote after an extended debate, becoming the second state after Uttarakhand to adopt such a law. The Bill was introduced following recommendations of a state-appointed committee.
The legislation seeks to establish a uniform legal framework governing marriage, divorce, succession and live-in relationships, irrespective of religion. Uttarakhand had earlier become the first state to enact a UCC in February 2024, marking a significant shift in personal law reforms in India.
