West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee created a constitutional first by personally arguing her case before the Supreme Court of India, becoming the first sitting Chief Minister to do so.

Appearing before a Bench headed by Surya Kant, she challenged the legality of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, alleging selective targeting of West Bengal by the Election Commission of India through the appointment of micro-observers.

The Supreme Court issued notice to the ECI on the issue and listed the matter for further hearing on February 9.
