India has discovered a new human blood group named CRIB (Cromer India Bengaluru) at Rotary Bangalore TTK Blood Centre—the first of its kind globally.
It was found in a 38-year-old woman in Karnataka whose blood showed panreactivity—reacting with all tested samples, including O+ blood. Even 20 family members were incompatible.
After detailed analysis by the UK’s International Blood Group Reference Laboratory, a new antigen under the Cromer system was confirmed.
The discovery highlights the importance of advanced blood typing and genetic diversity in India’s population.
