Culture & UNESCO Heritage

UNESCO has inscribed Boreendo, a rare clay vessel-flute associated with the Indus Valley musical tradition, on its Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding list. The instrument’s unique sound and ancient lineage are at risk due to declining craftsmanship and limited transmission to younger generations.

Archaeological excavations at Mohenjo-daro and Harappa have uncovered terracotta and bone flutes remarkably similar to the modern Boreendo, underscoring its continuity from the Indus Valley civilisation to contemporary folk practices.

APSC relevance: Useful for South Asian cultural history, UNESCO heritage lists, and connections between ancient civilisations and living traditions.
