Under the Assam Uniform Civil Code Bill 2026, members of Scheduled Tribes are exempted from the provisions of the Code. The exemption is based on Article 366(25), which defines Scheduled Tribes, read with Article 342 of the Constitution of India, which empowers the President to specify Scheduled Tribes for each State and Union Territory.

The Bill extends to the whole of Assam and also applies to residents of Assam living outside the state, while preserving the customary laws and traditional practices of Scheduled Tribal communities.

APSC Relevance: Uniform Civil Code, constitutional provisions and tribal safeguards.
