With a new government in Manipur, the Ministry of Home Affairs has appointed Ajit Lal, a retired 1974-batch IPS officer, as Adviser for North East Affairs. He succeeds AK Mishra, whose tenure concluded recently.

AK Mishra, a 1987-batch Rajasthan cadre IPS officer, played a key role in tripartite negotiations with Kuki-Zo insurgent groups under the Suspension of Operations (SoO) framework and was also associated with the Naga peace process. His tenure saw the signing of a Memorandum of Settlement with the pro-talks faction of United Liberation Front of Asom on December 29, 2023.

The change in advisory leadership comes at a sensitive phase of peacebuilding and political transition in the region, underscoring continued central oversight in Northeast security and reconciliation efforts.
