Governance – Anti-Drug Strategy
The Punjab Chief Minister has introduced a reward policy for police officers excelling in the anti-drug campaign under Yudh Nasheyan Virudh. Officers making heroin seizures above 1 kg will receive cash rewards of ₹1.2 lakh, encouraging proactive policing.
The campaign also integrates social and community measures. Schools have adopted an anti-drug syllabus, with a mega Parent–Teacher Meeting reaching 20 lakh parents and students. Villages are passing self-declared resolutions to become drug-free, while defence committees are monitoring activities at local levels. To divert youth from addiction, the state is promoting sports through Khedan Watan Punjab Diyan and building new stadiums.
Lesson for Assam
For Assam, where cross-border drug trafficking is a major issue, Punjab’s model offers valuable insights. Linking police rewards with results can strengthen enforcement. Community-driven resolutions and local defence committees can create social accountability. Introducing drug awareness in schools and combining it with sports initiatives may provide Assam’s youth with positive alternatives, complementing the enforcement drive.
