Philosophy / Indian Thought

Tagorean distance refers to Rabindranath Tagore’s idea of the necessary moral and emotional distance between the self and power, possession or rigid nationalism. For Tagore, closeness to humanity required distance from domination, aggressive nationalism and mechanical modernity.

He argued that when societies collapse this distance—by absolutising the nation, race or state—they lose ethical balance and creative freedom. Tagorean distance thus becomes a tool for critical self-reflection, allowing harmony between the individual, society and the world.
