The Southern Ocean carbon anomaly refers to the unexpected strengthening of the Southern Ocean as a carbon sink, despite climate models predicting that global warming would weaken its ability to absorb carbon dioxide. Models had suggested that stronger winds and upwelling would bring CO₂-rich deep waters to the surface, leading to higher emissions.

Contrary to these projections, observations show that the Southern Ocean has continued to absorb an increasing share of human-emitted CO₂. This anomaly highlights gaps in current climate modelling and underscores the complex role of oceans in regulating the global carbon cycle. Understanding this behaviour is crucial for refining climate projections and mitigation strategies.
