A workshop on Shodō, the traditional Japanese art of calligraphy, was recently conducted in Assam. Shodō literally means “the way of writing” and involves artistic brushwork to create expressive Japanese characters.

Originating from Chinese calligraphic traditions, Shodō reached Japan around the 5th century alongside Buddhism and kanji characters. It later evolved to incorporate Japan’s native hiragana and katakana scripts, becoming an important expression of Japanese cultural heritage.
