Environment & Sustainable Development – Urban Mobility Initiatives
Shillong has launched its first Public Bicycle Sharing (PBS) system as part of the Shillong Urban Mobility Policy (2024), marking a significant move towards sustainable and non-motorised urban transport. The policy envisions that 35% of the city’s transport will be non-motorised, with a goal of transforming Shillong into a “walking and cycling city.”
In its first phase, over 20 electric bicycles have been introduced, encouraging residents to adopt eco-friendly commuting options and healthier lifestyles. The initiative is led by the Urban Affairs Department in collaboration with GIZ India under the Sustainable Urban Mobility – Air Quality, Climate Action & Accessibility (SUM-ACA) project, and supported by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).
This development aligns with India’s commitments to reduce urban carbon footprints, improve air quality, and enhance accessibility in hill cities facing space and pollution constraints.
