Section 301 is a provision of U.S. trade law that empowers the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) to investigate and respond to unfair, discriminatory or unjustifiable trade practices by foreign countries that harm U.S. commerce. Actions under Section 301 may include tariffs or other trade restrictions.

Recently, the U.S. government launched two Section 301 investigations involving India and several other countries.
The first probe targets excess manufacturing capacity across 16 major economies, including India, China, the European Union, Japan, Mexico and Vietnam.
The second investigation focuses on forced labour practices, covering around 60 countries, with India among the key nations under scrutiny.

APSC Relevance: Important for international trade policy, India–US economic relations and global trade disputes.
