Polity / Constitutional Law

The Supreme Court has held that candidates belonging to SC, ST, OBC and EWS categories are fully eligible for appointment to general (unreserved) posts, provided they score equal to or above the general-category cutoff.

The Court clarified that the general category is open to all, and reservation applies only to earmarked reserved seats. This ensures merit-based selection for unreserved posts while retaining constitutional protections for reserved vacancies.

Relevance: helps understand reservation policy, equality before law, and judicial interpretation of recruitment rules.
