Ratan Tata’s most underappreciated yet significant contribution has been merging social entrepreneurship with business in Assam. His efforts in the region demonstrated how the remote Northeast could be effectively integrated with the rest of India. His leadership in fostering public-private partnerships is particularly commendable.

One of his notable initiatives was bringing the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) to Assam, aimed at promoting the development of the entire Northeast. Established in Guwahati in 2010, TISS quickly became a success, reflecting Tata’s dynamic vision of social entrepreneurship. He proposed expanding the curriculum to include Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Myanmar, encouraging exchange programs to increase engagement and attract applicants beyond the Northeast.

Today, TISS graduates about 250 students annually, with over 2,000 students from across the Northeastern states having completed their education there. This initiative stands as a testament to genuine integration within the region.
