Naresh Chandra Dev Varma of Tripura has been named a Padma Shri awardee for 2026 in the field of Literature and Education. A committed proponent of the Kokborok language, he has dedicated his life to its preservation and academic advancement.
He has authored around 30 books in Kokborok and has been actively involved in scholarly and cultural debates surrounding the language. Varma has consistently advocated the use of Bangla or Devanagari scripts for Kokborok, contributing to its wider recognition and institutionalisation. The award acknowledges his sustained efforts to strengthen indigenous literature and linguistic heritage in Tripura.
