A major analysis published in The Lancet Regional Health – Southeast Asia has revealed that Northeast India accounts for more than one-third of all zoonotic disease outbreaks in the country between 2018 and 2023.
The study highlights that the region’s unique ecological setting — where humans, livestock, and wildlife frequently interact — makes it highly vulnerable to zoonotic infections. This includes diseases transmitted from animals to humans, often exacerbated by deforestation, wildlife trade, and land-use changes.
Experts have called for stronger surveillance mechanisms and an integrated “One Health” approach that links human, animal, and environmental health. The findings underscore the urgent need for preventive strategies and cross-sectoral collaboration to manage future health risks in the region.
