Definition:
A localized weather phenomenon where cold, dry air moves over warmer lake waters, picking up moisture and heat, resulting in heavy snowfall on the downwind shores.
Mechanism:
Cold air mass moves over a large, relatively warmer lake.
The air warms and absorbs moisture from the lake surface.
As it moves away from the lake and cools, moisture condenses and falls as snow, often heavily.
Key Characteristics:
Localized & intense snowfall
Often forms snow belts on the leeward side of lakes
Requires significant temperature difference between lake water and air
