Indian History and Culture
A study by Deccan College, Symbiosis School for Liberal Arts, and ASI identified Kotada Bhadli in Kutch, Gujarat, as the earliest known caravanserai from the Mature Harappan phase (2300–1900 BCE). Strategically located along inland trade routes linking Dholavira, Lothal, and Shikarpur, it served as a fortified stopover for traders and pack animals. The site functioned as a rural logistical hub providing shelter and security, highlighting the Harappan civilization’s organized trade network and administrative sophistication.
