Disaster Management & Geophysical Risk ( Important for upcoming Ranger exam)

India has issued a major update to its seismic zonation map under the revised Earthquake Design Code (2025), marking the most significant overhaul in decades.

Introduction of Zone VI (Highest-Risk Category):
For the first time, the entire Himalayan arc—from J&K–Ladakh to Arunachal Pradesh—has been placed in Zone VI, a newly created category denoting maximum seismic hazard.
This classification acknowledges the extreme, persistent tectonic stress along the Indian–Eurasian plate collision boundary, long known for generating powerful earthquakes.

APSC relevance: Critical for disaster management, seismic zonation, vulnerability of Northeast India, and updated national building codes.
