Environment and Biodiversity Conservation

The Tamil Nadu government has established India’s first Centre of Excellence for Hornbill Conservation at the Anamalai Tiger Reserve in Coimbatore district. This pioneering initiative seeks to protect hornbills—crucial seed dispersers in tropical forests—whose survival is increasingly threatened by habitat loss and climate change.

With ₹1 crore sanctioned under the Endangered Species Conservation Corpus Fund, the Centre will focus on scientific research, habitat restoration, and community engagement. It aims to protect the four hornbill species native to the Western Ghats, enhancing conservation outcomes for these ecologically vital birds while promoting biodiversity in one of India’s richest ecosystems.
