Art & Culture – Cultural Heritage and Festivals

The Government of Maharashtra has officially declared Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav as the State Festival, recognizing its deep cultural and historical significance. Culture Minister Ashish Shelar announced that the government will extend financial support for its grand, statewide celebration.

The public observance of Ganeshotsav was popularized by Lokmanya Tilak in 1893 as a unifying cultural movement during India’s struggle for independence. The festival has since evolved into one of the most prominent and widely celebrated traditions in Maharashtra, fostering community participation and cultural identity.
