Ganabandhu, a Brahmaputra river dolphin, has been unveiled as the official election mascot of Sonitpur district for the Assembly elections 2026 under SVEEP initiatives. The move, along with the inauguration of a voter awareness selfie point, aims to enhance public participation in the electoral process.
The Brahmaputra river dolphin, India’s National Aquatic Animal, is commonly called the “pink dolphin” and relies on echolocation due to poor eyesight. Found mainly in the Brahmaputra, its use as a mascot symbolises both conservation awareness and civic responsibility.
APSC Relevance: Important for electoral awareness (SVEEP), biodiversity and state symbols of India.
