France has joined a growing list of countries officially recognising the State of Palestine, a move that strengthens the international push to revive the long-stalled two-state solution. With this decision, 144 of the 193 UN member states now recognise Palestine, including India, Russia, China, and a majority of nations across the Global South. Recently, Spain, Ireland, and Norway also extended recognition, reflecting a shift in European diplomatic posturing.
France’s recognition comes amid an unprecedented humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where over 2 million people are facing what experts describe as man-made famine. The move also aligns with France’s broader diplomatic agenda to rekindle peace negotiations and support Palestinian statehood ahead of its upcoming presentation at the UN General Assembly and a planned UN conference in collaboration with Saudi Arabia.
While several EU members such as Sweden, Cyprus, and former Eastern Bloc nations had previously recognised Palestine, France’s decision as a major Western power adds significant diplomatic weight. It signals a strategic realignment in Europe’s engagement with the Israel-Palestine conflict, especially in light of ongoing regional instability and the erosion of the two-state framework in recent years.
