Part of Phase 1 of nationwide implementation.

Target: All Passport Seva Kendras to be covered by mid-2025.

Cities Covered in Phase 1:

Nagpur, Bhubaneswar, Jammu, Goa, Shimla, Raipur, Amritsar, Jaipur, Chennai, Hyderabad, Surat, Ranchi, Delhi.

Background:

Initiated under Passport Seva Programme (PSP) Version 2.0 (started April 2024).

Implemented by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

Features of E-Passports:

Traditional booklet + electronic enhancements.

Gold-coloured symbol on front cover for identification.

Embedded RFID chip and antenna within inlay.

Uses Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) for:

Secure biometric & personal data storage.

Authentication & verification.

Advantages:

Enhanced data security and identity protection.

Reduces risk of:

Tampering.

Identity fraud.

Fake passport circulation.

Other Key Points:

Not mandatory; existing passports remain valid until expiry.

Supports international border security by improving document authenticity.
