Recently, the Cyber Wing of Maharashtra Police played a key role in rescuing over 60 Indian nationals who were tortured and forced into ‘cyber slavery’ in Myanmar.
What is Cyber Slavery?
Cyber Slavery refers to a modern form of human trafficking where individuals are:
Lured with false promises of high-paying jobs abroad (often through social media or agents),
Trafficked to foreign countries,
Confined and forced to work in illegal online operations — such as romance scams, phishing, and cryptocurrency frauds — under threat, coercion, or violence.
Example:
In this case, the victims were taken to Myanmar with the promise of good jobs.
On arrival, they were held captive and made to work in cybercrime rackets, targeting people globally through online scams.
These victims had little or no freedom and were subjected to physical and mental abuse, making it a case of cyber slavery.
