The Manipur Zoological Garden, in partnership with the India Turtle Conservation Program, has achieved the first artificial incubation of Asian Giant Tortoises in the state. From a single nest, 28 hatchlings emerged this year, offering hope for the survival of one of Northeast India’s most threatened reptiles.
The Asian Giant Tortoise, the largest tortoise species in the region, is classified as Critically Endangered. Native to the forests of Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram, Assam, and Meghalaya, its population has sharply declined due to hunting and habitat loss.
Encouraged by this breakthrough, the zoo is planning a conservation breeding programme aimed at strengthening wild populations through eventual release of captive-bred individuals.
