International Relations – BRICS & Multilateral Diplomacy
BRICS, initially comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, underwent a major expansion in 2024 with the inclusion of Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates. Indonesia joined the bloc in 2025, becoming its tenth full member.
India is scheduled to assume the presidency of BRICS in 2026. Under its leadership, India aims to redefine the purpose and direction of the grouping under the theme “Building Resilience and Innovation for Cooperation and Sustainability.” This reflects India’s vision to align BRICS more closely with the priorities of the Global South and contemporary global challenges.
During its presidency, India is expected to focus on promoting reformed multilateralism, particularly with respect to the United Nations Security Council, International Monetary Fund, and World Trade Organization. Advancing cooperation in digital public infrastructure, responsible artificial intelligence, and sustainable development will also be key areas of emphasis. As BRICS enters a new era with an expanded membership, India’s presidency is poised to shape its strategic vision and global relevance.
