Economy – Industry & Technology

Badge engineering is a practice in the automobile industry where different manufacturers share a common platform or even an entire vehicle, with one company avoiding the need to create a new model from scratch. This strategy reduces production costs, accelerates market entry, and helps expand product portfolios.

In India, one of the earliest and most iconic examples was the Hindustan Motors Ambassador, essentially a rebadged version of the Series III Morris Oxford, produced from 1957 to 2014. In recent years, the collaboration between Toyota and Maruti Suzuki has brought this practice into prominence again, leading to twin models such as Toyota Glanza and Maruti Baleno, or Toyota Hyryder and Maruti Vitara.

The concept highlights how strategic alliances in the automobile industry can shape consumer choice, enhance competitiveness, and deepen technological collaboration in the market.
