“Accelerating action and mobilizing all actors to conserve and sustainably use the ocean.”
Aim:
- To support urgent action for conservation and sustainable use of oceans, seas, and marine resources.
- To advance implementation of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14 – Life Below Water.
Three Priorities:
- Governance:
- Strengthen multilateral processes for ocean protection.
- Key focus: Implementation of the BBNJ Agreement (Marine Biodiversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction).
- Financing:
- Mobilize financial resources for sustainable blue economy and marine conservation.
- Knowledge Sharing:
- Enhance marine science research and ensure better dissemination to guide policy-making.
Expected Outcome:
- Adoption of the “Nice Ocean Agreements” — a potential international pact for sustainable ocean conservation.
Previous UN Ocean Conferences:
- 2017: Hosted by Sweden and Fiji in New York.
- 2022: Hosted by Portugal and Kenya in Lisbon.
